Thai food at Thaikhun, Metrocentre
It’s not new that I love Thai food, but surprisingly this was my first visit to Thaikhun in the Metrocentre! I’ve wandered past it quite a few times and always loved how bright and quirky the whole restaurant was, but it’s been a while since I’ve been to the Metrocentre for food now I work in the city centre. It’s nice to have a different type of food now in the Metrocentre, and even better that it is Thai!
I feel like I’ve been home forever since we went to Thailand, so I’m having withdrawals. I miss walking along the street and grabbing some Pad Thai or some fresh chicken. So the closest you can get to that in England is Thaikhun.
What is Thaikun?
Thaikun is a Thai street food style restaurant in the food quarter in the Metrocentre. It’s decorated full of trinkets from Bangkok and they’re all amazing, I could fill my house with them. The food on the menu is also inspired by the food which you’ll see on the streets of Bangkok!
Main dishes
I could quite happily eat all of the menu, but I had to pick, and obviously pad thai, dumplings and spring rolls won. They’re some of my absolute favourites and I miss them since coming home, they have to be cooked just right and these were! Pad Thai needs to have cashews, are very few restaurants add it, but Thaikhun does!
I was only just introducing my friend to Thai food so we weren’t quite up to a sharing platter just yet, (next time). It’s definitely the Bangkok street platter I’m coming for!
Thaikhun does all the classic dishes that you would see in Thailand, like chicken satay, pad thai, fried rice and all the Thai curries. You can wash it all down with a classic Singha beer too, although it’s not 50p like it is in Thailand.
Puddings
Pudding wise they only really have one dessert that I saw in Thailand, which is the mango sticky rice. I’m still yet to try that, it always smelt delicious but we were always too stuffed to have anything. I also grabbed the Nutella pancakes, I saw someone else get them and they looked too amazing to not get. I mean look at them!
They also do a Vegan menu, which is quite common to see in Thailand. A lot of the recipes are classic meals such as dumplings, thai curries and Pad Thai. It uses tofu as a substitute, which I had quite a lot of in Thailand. It tastes amazing, and if not better than the meat versions. The Metrocentre has a few good Vegan restaurants, Ask Italian being one of the best I’ve visited too.
I love visiting Thaikhun, and do wish they had one in the city centre so I could go more often. Although it’s not the cheapest meal out, and especially compared to Thai prices, but it’s one of the best alternatives. If they’d deliver some Pad Thai to my house, I’d have some right now!
