The Fat Mermaid, Amble
It’s not all that often I’ll go out for food in Northumberland, never mind Amble. You always see things about restaurants in Newcastle on Instagram, so I barely try anywhere local. It apparently means I am missing out on some gems like The Fat Mermaid in Amble. I wanted to try this ages ago, but for some reason didn’t get around to it. We eventually booked to try it last Friday and I’m kicking myself for not going sooner.
The restaurant
The restaurant itself is quite small and intimate. The interior is lovely and really modern but comfortable. As there was a few of us we were situated on a larger table, which I much preferred. If there is a few or just the two of you, you will be sat on the singular tables. There is something about the small 2 person tables next to one another I don’t quite like though. I always feel like I’m intruding on the next persons table. So I would much prefer going in bigger groups for this reason. But that’s just a personal preference.
The food
You don’t just have to like seafood to visit here. There is a mixture of food from ‘the sea’ to from ‘the soil’ and ‘from the land’. So whether you prefer meat based or even veggie there is something for everyone. There is also a small choice of starters, desserts and sides. We opted for the scotch egg of the week, which was duck. My first scotch egg so very interesting. Some of the girls got the parfait which also looked lovely.
Main meals we all had quite a variety, I opted for chicken schnitzel which was amazing! I definitely need to try the risotto next time though. Obviously, we got all the sides to share. But I would really recommend the lobster mac & cheese!
Dessert wise, there wasn’t all that much choice. I had cheesecake, which was relatively nice but not amazing. Definitely pig out on starters and mains instead!
The service
Everyone here was lovely. The staff we’re really attentive and always on the ball. It always makes the restaurant experience that much better when the staff are lovely. We were always offered another bottle of wine, rather than trying to flag someone down for another. Always makes the experience better!
Visiting The Fat Mermaid has really made me want to branch out more restaurant wise. I definitely need to take more local trips in Northumberland for food. I bet we’re all missing out on some amazing hidden food spots. I know there is definitely a few more in Alnwick I want to try.
Plus if the weather is nice, you can always go for a nice wander in the sunshine before or after! Little perks.
