Visting Oakdown Holiday Park Devon in a Shepherd Hut

I’ve not been camping or anything since I was little, I used to love going up to Scotland in the tent as a kid. I don’t know why I haven’t been more, especially glamping now! Our little shepherds hut in Oakdown Holiday Park in Devon was actually the cutest way to delve back into camping too.

It was actually my first time being down south, other than London, so I was so looking forward to looking about. My friend moved down to Devon earlier in the year, so this was our first time visiting. It was actually our first outing away from home just us lot too, and it was well overdue. For an £80 return flight with FlyBe we really can’t complain, and definitely need to visit more (in the summer). I definitely need to do more UK breaks.

As this was my first time glamping I wasn’t sure I would love it, I like my amenities and wasn’t sure about going outside for a wee. But actually it exceeded my expectations so much. I’d actually live in one of these as they’re just so peaceful. Probably the best sleep I’ve had in a long time!

Inside the hut

Our little shepherds hut had a; sofa; double bed; electric fire; mini kitchen with kettle and microwave etc, a tv; cute little blankets; a bbq and sweet little deck chairs outside. In the summer I bet it has a total different effect. I’d of loved to been able to have a bbq outside or eat our breakfast outside. But alas it rained all weekend typically but didn’t spoil it one bit. The toilet was also only a 1 minute walk away, if that. So was in a great location. 

There was only one other shepherds hut on the site and it was decorated differently to ours. I loved how each hut had its own little quirky decor. Ours was more pink and cutesie sort of vibe, and the other was more rustic with a lot of tartan etc. Both were so pretty! There is other types of pods available on the site. But I do prefer a little bit of luxury like a tv when we were flying down!

The site itself wasn’t too far away from places to visit, it was just down the road from Sidmouth to grab lunch or tea and pop to the shops. Need to be near the shops to stock up on hot chocolate and sweets, obviously. There was other sweet places to visit nearby such as:

The Donkey Sanctuary 

The Donkey Sanctuary in Devon was one of my favourites, and we hit on for some sunshine too. The sanctuary is free and only a 15 minute walk from the site. It is full of the cutest donkeys that all have their own little stories where they came from. Place full of eeyores is right up my street!

Lyme Regis

The little town is a bit like Whitby just minus the abbey. It’s a cute little seaside town with pretty colourful beach huts and a walk around the harbour. We stopped off here for lunch in the sunshine and it was beautiful! 

Beer

Beer is a bit similar to Lyme Regis but it also has quarry caves you can visit. We didn’t make it this time as we were going out on the evening so had to get back, but will have to squeeze it in next time for some exploring.

Exeter

The park isn’t too far away from Exeter either, which is a good place for shopping or going along the quayside. We went for some amazing pizza at On The Waterfront. I wish we had an excuse to get a giant one however. There is also a quirky bar called Dr Inks too, which I loved inside. We did get rained out for our day out though, so missed out a lot!

I’d go back to our little Devon shepherd hut in a heartbeat. We’re actually debating on going back next year for the Folk Festival! Hopefully we’ll get our cute little pink one again too! Oakdown Holiday Park isn’t too far away from the Folk Festival too!
