Weekend in Chania Crete from Newcastle Airport
I’ve been dying to go to Chania in Crete since I went to Zadar back in 2020. It’s one of the Ryanair routes from Newcastle Airport so it was another weekend break on my radar. I’ve been to Crete before but it was a looong time ago! So to me it felt like a completely new place to experience.
With it being a Ryanair flight you know it means there’s a budget break in there somewhere. We decided to go for a long weekend and just enjoy some sunshine. Originally we did think we would go off exploring every day. Think we did forget it’s 35+ degrees! So we did very little exploring than we thought, and a lot more in the sea!
Getting from the airport
Typically as unprepared as we usually are we didn’t research anything and were just winging it all. There is plenty of taxis outside of the airport. Some take cash and some take card. So maybe prepare to have around €20-30 to hand just in case. There is also a shuttle bus that takes you into Chania Centre, again you’ll need cash for this too. There is no Uber here so you can’t rely on that for once.
Getting around Chania
We didn’t see many taxi or other services whilst we were there. But Chania is so easy to get around on foot. We walked everywhere from the Old Town to the beach, and it really wasn’t too far. Trying to get back to the airport was hard! We did eventually find some taxi numbers on google to prebook, as I wasn’t hunting for a taxi at 6am!
Eating in Chania
We chose to stay around the most touristy spots this year. We do usually try to go off the beaten track a bit more, but we loved the vibe down at the marina. There’s so much people watching and some half decent restaurants around too. There is lots of Greek foods obviously but there is also some tapas and Mexican places nearby. I would recommend again having cash, most places take card but there is still a lot that prefer cash.
Things to do in Chania
Like I said, we had bright ideas to see everything. But in reality it’s HOT in July.
Visiting the port and the lighthouse will be one of the first things. If you’re lucky you may also see some turtles in the port!
Wandering the streets of the Old Town. This was one of my favourites. But we only really saw it in the evening when it was a bit cooler. The streets are winding and beautiful! There is also a lovely square where you’ll probably see some dancing or singers!
See the beaches of Chania. We spent a lot of our time at the beach. They’re all really clean and well looked after. You can also rent a sunbed on the beach for €20 for the day!
I really loved Chania. I would definitely want to go back again. It was a lovely chill few days and the locals are lovely. It was a nice few days and just what we needed!
