Visiting Coniston in the Lake District
I’ve been to Coniston a few times now and it’s such a sweet little village. We’ve been at all different times of year, so had lots of different types of weather for our walks whilst visiting. This year we went in October, and did not hit on with the weather. But one good thing about the Lake District is, it doesn’t matter what the weather is, you get up and dressed anyway.
Coniston is quite a small little village, but it’s a good base for lots of different walks. Plus, it also has a few good little pubs to finish your walk in with rhe fire burning.
Where to stay?
There is lots of hotels and bed and breakfasts in the area. But there is also lots of different cottages available. Every year that we go to the Lake District, we always book with The Coppermines. Everywhere that we have stayed with them has been great. Especially as there is eight of us that usually goes! Neighbouring towns like Windermere also have amazing locations to stay in.

The Old Man of Coniston
Depending on the weather when you visit, the Lake District will depend on how easy some walks are. The old man of Coniston can be done in nicer weather by most people. When we went this year, we definitely didn’t hit on with easy weather. Depending on when you go, will depend on what cause you need to pack. You will need a backpack with things to last you a few hours for this walk and maybe some additional layers. Or waterproofs an our case. You have amazing views if you’re lucky for no clouds though!
Cathedral Caves
It was actually the first time I have been here. I stumbled upon it, looking for things to do when it was a torrential downpour. This walk was a nice and easy walk for most and wasn’t too long for anyone that can’t do longer hikes. There is a few hills, so you do need some walking boots for the different surfaces you’ll face. The caves at the end were so cool to see though, different to the usual walks.
Tarn Hows
There is two different ways you can do Tarn Hows, there is a car park nearer the lakes, or you can walk directly from Coniston. The walk from Coniston has quite a few hills, and is around a 6/7 mile hike, so you need some sturdy shoes for this too. Parking nearer the tarn is a lot more accessible, even for any prams or wheelchairs.
Coniston Lake
I’ve written about Coniston before and the lake so I won’t go into too much detail. But the lake itself is great for any watersports such as paddleboarding, and renting bikes for a bike ride. You can also do various walks around the lake, then pop to the cafe which is also dog friendly!
If you want to drive further out of where you are there is also lots of nearby walks to other Lakes that aren’t too far from Coniston. So depending on how long you’re there, there is plenty to fill up ypur trip!
